2009-10 NWHBCA Pool League News

Week 32

There was a huge shake-up in the standing this week thanks to four of the six matches played this week finishing in 4-1 matches.  Some teams are making moves up while others are making big moves to drop down.  This is the first week that I've seen four matches end with four rounds for teams involved.  As we near the end of the season, you should keep a close watch on the standings which you can find at the bottom of the team stats page.  Check out where everyone is...

Now on to the news...

We had a good number of 40s and table runs this week.  Six players scored a 40 this week and another got one in a make-up match.  There were six table runs this week and another one in that make-up match.  Someone got an 8OTB and it was a good thing when you check out the rest of his match.  Check it out...

News That Makes A Difference

Week 32 News -

Please visit the rules discussion page and keep yourself updated concerning rules in our league.

6th Scotch Doubles -

TBA (working around City BCAPL schedule)

The weekly match results pages have been updated, so you can now view the scores of all matches for every week.

If you have any questions about the league, I have a page set up for FAQs for our league for you. Please click on the FAQs page. There is a comparison of our league scoring system to other known scoring systems if you click on the link here in this paragraph that will help you to realize the opportunity our league gives that others don't come close to.  It makes higher end teams play better and gives opportunity to lower end teams.
In one of the more rare matches between top 5 shooters, Brent Thomas defeated Billy Chilton 8-5 in their match this week to get his 40.  The win ended up breaking Billy's 40 as he had 4 wins.
Trey Reyer gave someone a 2 this week and it was the first score of 2 he's given a player all season.  He has, however, given up four zeroes and eight ones.
The Ballbusters were able to take 4 rounds in a match from the Disturbed Balls this week despite shooting a combined total of 14 balls below their Expected Scores.  Three players shot 5, 6, and 10 below their ES while the other two shot just 2 and 5 above theirs, but unfortunately Disturbed Balls scored the majority of their total in one round and lost the other four.
Last week for the Travelin' Cues three players had great matches while two others didn't do so well and they won just 2 rounds.  This week, James Buller shot a +30 and 16 above his ES while his other four teammates all shot below their ES including 3 who shot 10 or more below theirs...and they still won 2 rounds.  Three players from the Travelin' Cues made the "Come On Man!" column this week.
Jenise Bridges almost did something nobody else has ever done in our league.  She almost finished her match with five scores of three.  Jenise went into her last match with scores of 3-3-3-3.  She shot a 7 in the final game.
In a very bizarre match, the Travlin' Cues and Over The Hill just beat the SNOT out of each other.  The Travelin' Cues scored 4 quality games against OTH while OTH scored 7 against the Travelin' Cues.  The final score was a very low 150-127.  That's not bad to score a 127 and still only get outscored by 23 points!
In that same match, there were four zeroes, four ones and three twos.  One of those was an 8-1 win by Steven Terry with an 8OTB.  In Steven's other four games, he scored 0-5-1-5 ending with a -14.  James Buller shot a +30 in this match for TC.
Justin Petter shot a 40 this week against 8B4B.  If it were not for the fact that it was 8B4B, that may have been the shock of the week.
We have the Houston BCAPL City tournament coming up.  I have sent out emails and will continue to contact all players in our league.  I will put up a special page for our league alone outlining who will be playing in each category.  I will do that this weekend, so check it so that you know where you are playing.  Once you clarify where you are going to play, we need to get your fees paid and get you set up to go.
We also have make-up matches that need to get completed.  Let's work to get those done.  I will also be working with each team to make that happen.
Visit our Classified Ads.  It is only pool related items from our league members.  If you have anything to sell, email me.
I have yet to move forward with the 10-ball league.  You can find latest information for it on the  10-ball page.

Weekly Updates can be found by clicking on Weekly Updates also called "team updates" on the site.

If you'd like to see the exact results of this week's matches, click on Weekly Match Results .  You'll find archived weeks on there as well so that you can go back and review the matches for all of the weeks.  Feel free to keep track of your team's matches utilizing this new page.
Got a suggestion?  Have a comment?  Did I miss anything that should be in the news?  One suggestion I heard multiple times last season was the need for players to be able to voice their opinion on our website.  Many players do visit the website.  So far, nobody has sent an email with any suggestions or comments and I've included that now.  If you have any suggestions or comments or rules that you want discussed, contact me so that it can be posted on the website.

Shock of the week:

Individually, I think Jon Whiteman shooting a +13 (16 above his ES) against DysFUNctional is the shocker this week.  Jon had a table run and 4 wins against a very good DysFUNctional team to help his team take 4 rounds in the match..

I think for team play,  there were two shocks this week.  Seeing the Rail Runners outscore DysFUNctional by 17 points when DysFUNctional was an 18 point favorite over them has to be a real shocker.  The Rail Runners got 4 rounds for their efforts.  But the match between Over The Hill and the Travelin' Cues to me was as much as a shocker.  Nobody expects those two teams to end up 150-127.  That's just crazy talk.

This week's MVPs are:

Paul Holland (Great Whites) – Paul shot a 40 this week and 15 balls above his ES against Mayhem helping the Great Whites take 4 rounds in the match.  He shot a +22.
Justin Petter (Fallen Ones) – Justin shot a 40 this week against 8B4B along with a +18 which was 14 above his ES against them helping the Fallen Ones take 4 rounds in the match and helping push his team back into the discussion of a Vegas team.  He matched Paul Holland forcing a tie for MVP this week.
Jon Whiteman  (Rail Runners) –  Jon went 4-1 and shot a +13 (16 above his ES) against DysFUNctional making him our "Shock of the Week" this week.  He also got his first table run of the season and his team's 2nd of the season.  His team took 4 rounds in the match.  If not for two other of his teammates shooting double digits above their own ES, Jon would be the primary MVP this week, but for now, I'm sure he's happy making the list, especially when you see all the standout shooters this week (unlike last week).
James Buller (Travelin' Cues) – James shot a 40 this week and a +30 which was 16 above his ES against Over The HIll in a wild and crazy match.  Unfortunately, his team only took 2 rounds in the match.  James got his 6th table run of the season this week.
Ben Duncan (Over The Hill) – Ben went 3-2 against the Travelin' Cues and shot a +15 which was 14 above his ES against TC helping his team to take 3 rounds in the match.

This week's Honorable Mentions are:

Terri Delaney & Debra Lutz (Rail Runners) – Debra shot 10 above her ES and Terri shot 11 above her ES to join Jon Whiteman in helping the Rail Runners take 4 rounds from DysFUNctional in a huge upset..
Cip Robles, Michael Cook, Chad Mayton (Disturbed Balls) – Cip shot 8 above his ES, Michael 7 above his, and Chad 11 above his ES against the Ballbusters.  Unfortunately, their player with the highest average didn't come through and the Disturbed Balls won just one round.
Brent Thomas & John Linton (East Side Kids) –Brent went 5-0 and shot a +19 which was 7 above his ES while John shot 10 above his ES helping ESK to take 3 rounds from IITWI.
Richie Young (Great Whites) – Richie went 4-1 and shot a +9 against Mayhem shooting 5 above his ES helping the Great Whites to take 4 rounds.
Tom Jaquette  (Mayhem) – Tom went 2-3, but shot a -1 against the Great Whites this week which was 8 above his ES.  Unfortunately, his team only managed one round in the match.
Wes Griffin  (DysFUNctional) – Wes shot a 40 this week and a +12 against the Rail Runners which was 8 above his ES against them.  Unfortunately, the Rail Runners took 4 rounds from them.

*Remember, not always do the players with the top scores make the MVP board.  Sometimes, a lesser talented player who plays really well and scores a +10 is more valuable than a much better player who scores a +20 and when that happens, those players will stand out as MVPs.

Come On Man!

(I've heard good things about this column now with the name change.)

Steve Terry, Ray Berry, & Donny Hermis (Travelin' Cues) – This is the first time we have had three players from one team make this category in the same week.  Steven shot 10 below his ES even with an 8-1 win from an 8OTB aiding his score.  Ray shot 12 below his ES this week.  Donny Hermis finished 14 below his ES.  The three combined for 34 below their ES counteracting James Buller's +30, but they did manage to finish with 2 rounds still.  Come on man! Come on man!  Come on man!  That's just crazy...and LUCKY!  Oddly enough, James Buller made this category last week...what a turnaround!  Come on man!
Lauren Hargrave & Jason Sloan (DysFUNctional) – This is Lauren's second trip in two weeks here, but she's joined by Jason Sloan this week.  Against the Rail Runners, Lauren shot 13 below her ES and Jason shot 12 below his.  DysFUNctional who should be fighting for a Vegas spot right now falls further behind with a 1-4 match against the Rail Runners, a team they needed to beat in order to pass them.  They didn't get it done.  Come on man!
Shaun Quillen (Mayhem) – You can see the frustration on Shaun's face that night as he shot 13 below his ES and went 0-5 against the Great Whites with a -22.  His team took just one round.  Come on man!
Bill Balmerino (Disturbed Balls) – Poor Disturbed Balls.  They finally seem to be getting it going, but then their high shooter seems to have not read the memos.  While three players from Disturbed Balls shot 7, 8, and 11 above their ES against the Ballbusters, Bill shot 10 below his with a -3 despite winning 3 games and his team ended up with just one round.  Come on man!
Josh Gregory (Ballbusters) – This category isn't always just about players shooting well below their ES, but sometimes it is about them having a tough night and their team still winning.  Such is the case with Josh who against the Disturbed Balls went 3-2 and shot a +5 which was 10 under his ES against them.  His team still finished with 4 rounds.  Are you kidding me?  Come on man!
James Gatto (Fallen Ones) – This is another case where a player had a sub-par match, but his team still finished great.  James went 3-2 against an inferior 8B4B team and his +5 was 10 below his ES against them.  His team still managed to take 4 rounds in the match.  Come on man!

Leader Mark Divin scored a +11 this week and his +523 total now leads by 77.  Billy Chilton scored a +11 also this week and gains no ground, but he is 156 ahead of 3rd place.  It would appear these will be the leaders as we near the end of the season.  Mark Johnson scored a +10 this week and now leads Brent Thomas by just 5 points as Mark is now 3rd.  Brent Thomas scored a +19 gaining some ground and he’s 38 ahead of 5th.  Charlie Buckner holds the 5th spot and his team did not play this week.

Top 5 Averages

Top 5 Wins

Leader Mark Divin has had just 6 wins over the past two weeks and still leads with 126.  Billy Chilton has had 9 wins over that time period and his 117 puts him just 9 from the lead, so there is a formidable race there.  Josh Gregory has gotten 10 wins over the past two weeks including wins from a make-up match and now has 109 putting him in 3rd.  Charlie Buckner did not play last week and his team will make up that match.  His 107 has him in 4th.  Mark Johnson has picked up 6 wins over the past two weeks and is in 5th with 102.

Most 40s

Leader Mark Divin has failed to pick up a 40 over the past two weeks and still leads with just 10 in a tight race.  Billy Chilton also has not taken advantage of that and still has 9 and is in 2nd.  Brent Thomas added one over the past two weeks and is close behind in 3rd with 8.  Bill Balmerino, James Jatzlau, and Josh Gregory remained tied as neither has added to their total and all have 6.

Table Runs Leaders

Leader Mark Divin has added 2 table runs over the past two weeks and is still the leader now with 22 table runs.  Billy Chilton has also added two over the past two weeks and is now in 2nd with 16 and the race for the lead is on.  Brent Thomas added one to his total giving him 14 and he has a reasonable chance at the lead.  Sam Prasad picked up his 7th putting him in a tie now with teammate Mark Johnson for 4th place.

8-on-the-break leaders

None of the leaders have added to their total over the past two weeks.  Steven Terry picked up his first last week and the week before George Buckner picked up his 1st.

Top Ladies (Points For)

Leader Debra Lutz has scored 69 points over the past two weeks and now leads with 1031 just 6 ahead of her teammate.  Terri Delaney has scored 70 over the past two weeks gaining by one point during that time and remains 2nd now at 1025.  Teresa Cessna scored 72 over the past two weeks and one of those matches was a make-up match and she still has a make-up match left.  She is in 3rd now with 984 just 47 points out.  If Teresa scores well in that make-up match, we will have a true race for top lady player right down to the end.  Nicole Jackson scored 56 over the past two weeks and remains 4th with 939 points.  Lauren Hargrave scored 26 in a match over the same time period and she’s in 5th with 891 points.

Team 40 point rounds

The Great Whites added one to their total against Mayhem last week giving them their 24th and 9 more than 2nd place IITWI (15).  The Ballbusters added their 10th a make-up match against WTBS tying them at 10, but then WTBS got their 11th against 8B4B which puts them in a tie for 3rd with DysFUNctional.  The Travelin’ Cues added their 3rd of the season getting one against Disturbed Balls putting them in 9th.

All the averages when the actual 5 players for each team played were very close to the originally predicted output...yet there were a few upsets that turned those numbers upside-down..

OP is Original Prediction prior to actual players averages from those who played in the match.

The top line is the actual score.  The 2nd line is the TEAM PREDICTION based upon overall team performance and PER GAME average by the team.  This will be the data I use in the future along with other factors to show a predicted outcome.  The 3rd line is the averages of the actual players that played in that match and their difference which should be more of an accurate prediction using current averages. Once again, if all teams have not played each other equally, some averages and handicaps will be very inaccurate. **Played with 3 players.***Again, the current averages for the Oops players are not indicative of their actual averages as they haven't played several of the top-end teams which will lower their averages.

Last Week's Matches

The Great Whites had an even better week this week then last taking 4 rounds from Mayhem at Mayhem's home.  The Great Whites outscored Mayhem by 51 when they were an overall +34 favorite and won 17-8 by games.  The Great Whites were lead by Paul Holland who shot 15 above his ES and got a 40 shooting a +22.  Richie Young went 4-1 and shot 5 over his ES.  Doug Collett and Mark Johnson each shot 1 above their ES to help their team take 4 rounds.  Tom Jaquette lead Mayhem with a -1 which was 8 above his ES.  Nicole Jackson was the only other player who shot above their ES as she shot 1 above hers.  Tom Jaquette broke Richie's 40 in the 3rd round 8-6.  The Great Whites hold an 11 round lead for 1st over 2nd while Mayhem is struggling and is currently one round away from 6th place, the Vegas spot.

East Side Kids outscored IITWI by 10 this week and were a +7 match favorite, so it ended just 3 points higher than the expected score.  ESK will take 3 rounds in the match.  ESK was lead by John Linton who shot 10 above his ES while Brent Thomas shot a 40 and 7 above his ES.  Sam Delaschott shot 4 above his ES to lead IITWI.  Billy Chilton lost his 40 in this match 5-8 to Brent Thomas in the 3rd round.  Brent of course shot a 40.  IITWI seems to be solidifying themselves in the top 6th currently in 3rd as they are 3.5 rounds ahead of the Vegas spot.  The East Side Kids are making their move up and now are just 3.5 rounds behind the Vegas spot.  We'll keep an eye on them.  They do have the talent to move up.

Ballbusters outscored Disturbed Balls by 33 this week though they were a 46 point favorite.  They still managed to take 4 rounds in the match.  The Ballbusters were lead by Bruce Stewart who shot 5 above his ES.  Eduardo Bandala shot 2 above his ES.  Everyone else shot 5 or more below theirs for the Ballbusters.  The Disturbed Balls were lead by Chad Mayton who shot 11 above his ES.  Cip Robles shot 8 above his and Michael Cook shot 7 above his.  They played a really good match, but unfortunately, the rounds don't show it.  Bruce lost his 50 in the first round 7-8 to Bill Balmerino who leads the league in that category.  Currently, the Ballbusters are solidified it seems in 2nd place.  They are 5 rounds ahead of the 3rd place team (IITWI).  That's a very good lead going into the stretch.  The Disturbed Balls unfortunately are in last at this time and 17 rounds behind the Vegas spot which means mathematically, they no longer have a chance except for the blind draw.

Over The Hill outscored Travelin' Cues in a wild and crazy match this week at 20 Below by 23 points (150-127).  Ben Duncan lead his team going 3-2 and shooting a +15 which was 14 above his ES.  The other four shot 1, 2, 3, and 4 above their own ES.  James Buller joined Ben as one of our MVPs this week as he went 5-0 and shot a +30 which was 16 above his ES against OTH.  Nobody else on his team whot above their own ES.  OTH will take 3 rounds in the match.  Brian Garbs lost his only game 3-8 in the very first round to James Buller.  The Travelin' Cues currently are in 6th place which is the Vegas spot.  Over The Hill continues to raise eyebrows and are by virtual rounds just 5 rounds behind the Vegas spot.  They do have four make-up matches to play still which could make or break their run.  We'll keep an eye on them as well.
Fallen Ones outscored 8B4B by 47 points (185-138) and took 4 rounds at Slicks this week.  The Fallen Ones were lead by Justin Petter who made MVP going 5-0 with a +18 which was 14 above his ES.  Eddie Sikes also shot a 40 and 7 above his ES with a +18 to help his team.  Brian Dobbins was the only player on 8B4B to shoot above his ES and did so by +1.  The Fallen Ones had fallen and trying to rebound as they are in 4th now just 2.5 above the Vegas spot.  This match helped to move them back up after several disappointing weeks.  8B4B needed this match and will need better matches to move up as they are currently in 13th just 6.5 rounds behind the Vegas spot.  They had made a run at the Vegas spot several weeks ago, but seem to be just hanging around the same spot for now.  We'll see if they are able to make a run towards the end.

Rail Runners dominated DysFUNctional at their own home this week taking 4 rounds and outscoring them by 17 in a huge upset where they were 18 point match underdogs.  Jon Whiteman lead the Runners with a +13 which was 16 above his ES while Terri Delaney shot 11 above her ES and Debra Lutz shot 10 above hers as well.  Wes Griffin lead DysFUNctional as he was the only player to shoot above his ES and did so by 8.  The Rail Runners and DysFUNctional are both outside the Vegas spot, but still close and are fighting each other to get there.  This match put the Rail Runners in a tie with DysFUNctional for 9th place as both teams are 1.5 rounds behind the Vegas spot now.

Oops and WTBS did not play this week.

*When we mention a team is a favorite by a certain score, the score here is the difference in the score of the OVERALL MATCH.  So matches where a team is a favorite by 10 or less points should be very close matches overall.  You'll notice a low and high number.  This is a spread that compensates for different players that may play for a team.  Predictions are configured using overall team averages.  Most teams rotate 7 or 8 players into their matches, so obviously the actual spread will be determined by who plays for each team any given week.  That factor could be the reason for a team outscoring another team by a margin much different than their predictions may indicate.  Sometimes, a team just plays a great match though up and beyond their expectations against another team.  When a team does that, that team expects to win the majority, if not all the rounds in those matches.  Last season we had a team that was a 20-point underdog late in the season actually outscore their opponent by 20 points making for a 40 point difference.  That underdog team took all 5 rounds in the match at the end of the season when handicaps were applied..

Overall Preliminary Summary - At first glance, I see matches that stick out that should be close matches.  The East Side Kids should match up with the Great Whites if the right players play for ESK.  IITWI and the Ballbusters who are currently 2nd and 3rd should be a great match.  The Travelin' Cues and Rail Runners should match up closely.  Finally Oops and Mayhem should be a close match knowing who will be playing for Oops.  The other three matches should be just the opposite.  WTBS should be a huge favorite over the Disturbed Balls.  DysFUNctional should blow out the Fallen Ones by point though the Fallen Ones seem to always find a way to win rounds.  Over The Hill should be a 25 or more favorite over 8B4B.  Let's see what the numbers say...
East Side Kids at Great Whites (at Sharky's) - By TRA, the Great Whites are a +16 favorite by TRA, but knowing that Sam Prasad won't play for the Great Whites this week and Doug Collett will play instead, that would make this match more even.  If the right people play for ESK, this should be an even match overall.
IITWI at Ballbusters (at 20 Below) - By TRA, the Ballbusters are a mere +5 match favorite over IITWI.  This match is at 20 Below, so I think I'll stick with the TRA and the Ballbusters are a +5 favorite over IITWI this week.
Disturbed Balls at WTBS (at Slick Willies) -  WTBS by TRA is a +45 favorite over the Disturbed Balls and that was expected.  This match is at Slick Willies, so I'll make WTBS a +50 favorite over Disturbed Balls even though they have been slumping lately.

Fallen Ones at DysFUNctional (at Slick Willies) - By TRA, DysFUNctional is a +28 favorite over the Fallen Ones and they have a need to make a move to get up in the top 6.  The Fallen Ones also need this match which is important for both teams.  I see both teams fighting hard and thus the TRA will come into play and DysFUNctional is a +28 favorite over the Fallen Ones this week.

Travelin Cues at Rail Runners (at Side Pocket) - This one as expected is another close match.  By TRA, the Travlin' Cues are just a +11 favorite.  This match is at Side Pocket though and the Rail Runners just had a great match there last week.  But the Travelini' Cues normally play on similar tables.  I think I will have to trust the TRA on this one and the Travelin' Cues will be a +11 favorite over RR.

Oops at Mayhem (at Spirits) - The TRA has Mayhem as a +20 favorite in this match, but I happen to know that Oops has picked up another player and he will be playing this week along with Oops' higher-end players.  That will make this match much closer than the TRA shows which would show when that player's average becomes part of Oops' TRA.  Since he is a +3 higher than who he's playing for, that's a 15 point match difference which makes Mayhem a +5 favorite over Oops this week.
Over The Hill at 8B4B (at Sharky's) - The TRA has OTH as a +45 favorite at Sharky's this week and I think that is going to be pretty accurate.  It is tough to guess at this one not knowing who will show up for 8B4B.  So we'll go with the TRA and Over The Hill is a +45 favorite over 8B4B this week at Sharky's.

Summary

This week wasn't too difficult really.  The matches had teams that were either very close or far apart by averages, so you can use common sense to guess at the outcome for the most part without having to look at the averages.  But that's on paper and the matches still need to get played.  What you see are the expected outcomes which I feel will be fairly accurate to some degree.

Reoccurring News:

Recruiting for our league:

We have begun our 2009-10 Vegas League session.  Remember that teams are always on the lookout for players to rotate and for subs in general for the league when players aren't able to make it on a given Thursday night.  If you have friends or you're out and about and meet someone with an interest, please get their information to me so that I can have them available for teams who may need them.  Recruiting for our league is a league effort.
