2009-10 NWHBCA Pool League News

Week 30

Week 30 wasn't crazy like Week 29.  In fact, statistically, it was pretty boring.  We didn't have too many players shoot that far above their Expected Scores and in fact not too many shot that far below their ES.  It was tough finding 5 MVPs this week, but I managed and it worked out that I was one of them.  Even so, there were two 4-1 matches and out of the other four that were played, all were 3-2.  Let's check it out...

Now on to the news...

We had five 40s this week and four came for the first time for four players.  We also had five table runs this week and one was surprisingly a first.  Mark Divin continues his tear.  We didn't have any 8OTBs yet again.  There were three team 40s.  Check it out...

Congratulations to the following players for their efforts in the 2009-10 NW Houston BCA Vegas Season

in week 30 (February 18):

40s (5 wins):

Table Runs:

8 On The Break:

Phillip Marshall (Oops) vs Disturbed Balls 1st
Billy Chilton (IITWI) vs Fallen Ones 9th
Joshua Pangilinan (DysFUNctional) vs 8B4B 1st
Eric Gauthier (DysFUNctional) vs 8B4B 1st
Brian Garbs (Over The Hill) vs Rail Runners 1st

Mark Divin (Great Whites) 2 (20th)
Mark Johnson (Great Whites) 1 (7th)
Sam Prasad (Great Whites) 1 (6th)
Ray Berry (Travelin’ Cues) 1 (6th)
Josh Pangilinan (DysFUNctional) 1 (1st)

None

Billy Chilton moves closer to the lead for 40s picking up his 9th which is one away from the leader Mark Divin who has 10.  Other than that, four players go their first 40 of the season this week which is awesome.  Mark Divin continued his tear on table runs picking up two more this week giving him 20 for the season.  In fact, of the 6 table runs this week, five came in his match.  Mark's teammates Mark Johnson and Sam Prasad both got one and Ray Berry got one for the Travelin' Cues...against Mark Divin.  I'm surprised that Josh Pangilinan who got one this week has just one.  The drought on 8OTBs continues as we had none again this week..

Top 10 shooters of the week-

+19 Billy Chilton (IITWI) vs Fallen Ones

5th Scotch Doubles -

  Saturday, February 27th

@ Slicks @ 5:00 PM

The weekly match results pages have been updated, so you can now view the scores of all matches for every week.

If you have any questions about the league, I have a page set up for FAQs for our league for you. Please click on the FAQs page. There is a comparison of our league scoring system to other known scoring systems if you click on the link here in this paragraph that will help you to realize the opportunity our league gives that others don't come close to.  It makes higher end teams play better and gives opportunity to lower end teams.
Mark Divin almost got a 40 this week and got it broken in the last round by Ray Berry...ironically enough with a table run.  In fact, that was Ray's only win for the match.
TJ Skorupinksi (8B4B) had just 3 wins this week, but all three broke up a team 40.  That was the record for a larger part of the season until Billy Chilton broke 4 team 40s when he was the only player on his team to get a win in four different rounds earlier this season against the Great Whites.
TJ now has 16 broken Team 40s which ties him for the lead with Bill Balmerino.
James Buller has been setting the league on fire getting table runs at a record pace.  Unfortunately in his match against the Great Whites, he had table runs against him in his first two games.  He finished the match with a -14 score which was 17 balls below his ES.
Doug Collett who made the "Come On Man!" section last week rebounded this week and went 4-1 and shot a +6 against the Travelin' Cues.  His score was 11 above his Expected Score against them which this week was the highest in the league making him primary MVP this week as his team took 3 rounds.  You gotta like goig from "Come On Man!" to "Primary MVP" in back to back weeks.  That's what happens when a guy gets some sleep!
In fact, everyone on the Great Whites this week shot above their ES.  Doug's teammates shot 5, 3, 1, and 1 above their respective ES.  I fact, four players for the Great Whites went 4-1 in this match and a 5th player went 3-2.
For the Fallen Ones, three players shot 5, 6, and 6 above their ES against IITWI, but they still only managed 2 rounds.  Oddly enough, they had four players all go 2-3 in that match and one other wet 1-4.
Rebecca Busek made MVP for the 2nd week in a row for the East Side Kids!  She has been the reason they have been winning the past few weeks and this should clue everyone in the reason that everyone contributes in this league and its scoring system.  It is all about shooting at or above your Expected Score against an opposing team and Rebecca shot 10 above her ES this week picking up a 2nd MVP.
Two players got 40s for DysFUNctional and defining how their season has gone, they managed to win just ONE round.  In that match, four players for 8B4B shot above their ES while a fifth shot right at his ES.
Over The Hill this week managed to have a player in each category for the news.  They had two MVPs, one Honorable Mention and one "Come On Man!" this week all from the same match.  They managed 4 won rounds and watch out because they are climbing the ranks FAST!

Shock of the week:

Individually, the biggest shock is probably that there were no real shocks this week.  The largest difference above an ES is Doug Collett shooting +11 above his and that was it.  That was enough to earn him the PRIMARY MVP this week simply because nobody else really stood out and shot as far above their own.  Perhaps seeing Rebecca Busek make MVP for the 2nd week in a row is a bit shocking.  She's on her game.  I may think that James Buller shooting 17 under his ES was shocking, but two games were table runs against him...you take those out and he shot his ES basically.  Only two players shot more than 10 below their ES this week which is also rare.  It was a pretty boring week.  Maybe Doug Collett going 4-1 and shooting 11 above his ES on the same tables that he shot a -23 the week before against a team with about the same total of averages is a bit shocking, but sleep being  a factor the week before explains the big difference.  He shot 17 below his ES last week and 11 above his ES this week which is a 28 ball difference.

As far as teams go, the Great Whites were a +28 favorite over the Travelin' Cues and outscored them by 49 which was 21 above their Expected Team output.  That lead the league this week.  With Doug Collett shooting that far above his own ES, his teammates also shot above their own (all five did) and 4 table runs helped account for that difference.  Considering on those same tables as a team the week before they had a devestating match against the Ballbusters, you may consider this turnaround shocking, but then again, it is the highest scoring team in the league.  Also, a big difference was Doug Collett's turnaround from one week to the next going from no sleep to some sleep, so I don't know.  It wasn't too shocking to me.  I'll tell you what, the surging Over The Hill team was an even match against the Rail Runners and outscored them by 18 and took 4 rounds.  That is a bit more shocking I'd think.  It seems every week, someone on that team is contributing.  They are on a roll.  They just need to get some make-up matches made up.

This week's MVPs are:

Doug Collett (Great Whites) – This wasn't expected by some after last week's debacle against the Ballbusters, but Doug rebounded by going 4-1 with a +6 this week against an equally tough Travelin' Cues team this week which was 11 above his ES leading the league.  His team took 3 rounds and were one game away from taking all 5.  A table run saved the Travelin' Cues in the 5th round and a 1-8 loss made the difference in the fourth round.  Doug's 11 above his ES helped his team to take 3 rounds.
Rebecca Busek (East Side Kids) – Last week's primary MVP was edged out from almost making it two weeks in a row.  Rebecca went 4-1 and shot a +4 against Mayhem which was +10 above her ES helping her team to take 3 rounds in that match.
Jim Weygandt  (Over The Hill) –  Jim went 3-2 and shot a +9 against the Rail Runners helping his team to take 4 rounds against the Rail Runners this week.  He teamed up with teammate Terri Resendez who also makes MVP this week.
Terri Resendez (Over The Hill) – Terri joins teammate Jim Weygandt as an MVP this week as she went 3-2 and shot a +1 against the Rail Runners which was 8 above her ES.  They took 4 rounds.
Joshua Pangilinan (DysFUNctional) – Joshua went 5-0 and shot a +18 against 8B4B to lead his team shooting 8 above his ES this week.  Unfortunately, DysFUNctional only managed 1 round in the match.

This week's Honorable Mentions are:

Rob Schmid, T.J. Skorupinski, and Brian Dobbins (8B4B) – These three stood out this week as Rob shot 6 above his ES, T.J. 4 above his, and Brian 3 above his helping 8B4B take 4 rounds against DysFUNctional this week.
Phillip Marshall & Billy Barbier (Oops) – Phillip was on this list last week and makes it again this week with a different teammate.  Phillip went 5-0 and got his first 40 this week and shot a +12 which was 6 above his ES.  Billy went 4-1 and shot a +8 which was also 6 above his ES.  Surging Oops took 3 rounds this week against the Disturbed Balls.
Billy Chilton & Sam DelaSchott (IITWI) –Billy went 5-0 and shot a +19 which was his ES against the Fallen Ones.  Sam went 4-1 and shot a +8 which was 4 above his ES against them.  They helped their team to take 3 rounds in the match.
Brian Garbs (Over The Hill) – Brian went 5-0 and shot a +16 which was 6 above his ES against the Rail Runners helping OTH take 4 rounds in the match.
Chad Mayton  (Disturbed Balls) – Chad shot 7 balls above his ES against Oops this week though his team only took 2 rounds in the match.
Ted Ross  (Travlin' Cues) – Ted won just one game, but shot 5 balls above his ES against the Great Whites.  His four teammates shot a combined 27 balls below their ES.  They won just two rounds.

*Remember, not always do the players with the top scores make the MVP board.  Sometimes, a lesser talented player who plays really well and scores a +10 is more valuable than a much better player who scores a +20 and when that happens, those players will stand out as MVPs.

Come On Man!

(I've heard good things about this column now with the name change.)

James Buller (Travelin' Cues) – Against the Great Whites, James went 2-3 and shot 17 below his ES with a -14 having had two table runs against him.  Come on man!
Lauren Hargrove (DysFUNctional) – Against 8B4B, Lauren went 2-3 and shot a -8 which is 14 below her ES against that team which isn't what I'd expect from her making me wonder what is going on with her this week.  Tough week...come on man!
Teddy Wade (Over The Hill) – Well the good news for Teddy is that his team had his back in their match.  Teddy went 1-4 and shot a -13 against the Rail Runners which was 6 below his ES.  Come on man!  His team took 4 rounds!  COME ON MAN!!
Kelly Basham & Marty Silverman (Disturbed Balls) – Two this week came from the same team and they managed to squeeze out two rounds in the match anyhow.  Kelly went 1-4 and shot a -15 against Oops which was 8 below her ES.  Marty went 1-4 and shot 8 below his ES as well allowing Oops to take 3 rounds against them.  Come on man!

Most 40s

Four players got their first 40 of the season this week and there were just 5.  The other was Billy Chilton who moves within one of the lead as he has 9 now.  Mark Divin leads with 10.  Brent Thomas is in 3rd with 7.  Josh Gregory, James Jatzlau, and Bill Balmerino all are tied for 4th with 6 each still.

Table Runs Leaders

Here is a category that had some changes this week and they all came from the same match between the Great Whites and Travelin’ Cues.  Four players on the leader board got a table run in that match (one had two).  Leader Mark Divin got two table runs this week and leads now with 20.  Billy Chilton did not get one and he is still 2nd with 14.  Brent Thomas did not play and he’s 3rd still with 13.  Mark Johnson added one to his total and now has 7 and maintains 4th still by himself which is a good thing because two right behind him also got one.  Sam Prasad added one to his total as did Ray Berry giving them both 6 now and a tie for 5th.

8-on-the-break leaders

OP is Original Prediction prior to actual players averages from those who played in the match.

The top line is the actual score.  The 2nd line is the TEAM PREDICTION based upon overall team performance and PER GAME average by the team.  This will be the data I use in the future along with other factors to show a predicted outcome.  The 3rd line is the averages of the actual players that played in that match and their difference which should be more of an accurate prediction using current averages. Once again, if all teams have not played each other equally, some averages and handicaps will be very inaccurate. **Played with 3 players.***Again, the current averages for the Oops players are not indicative of their actual averages as they haven't played several of the top-end teams which will lower their averages.

Last Week's Matches

The Great Whites bounced back this week and outscored the Travlin' Cues 175-126 by 49 and by games 19-6.  The Great Whites will take 3 rounds in the match.  They were lead by team captain Doug Collett who went 4-1 and shot +11 above his ES with a +6.  Mark Johnson shot 5 above his ES to help out as he went 4-1 and shot a +12.  Sam Prasad also went 4-1 and shot a +14 which was 3 above his ES.  Mark Divin and Richie Young also shot 1 above their own ES helping the team finish with a solid 3 rounds.  Ted Ross lead TC shooting 5 above his ES while Ray Berry had to get a table run to finish one above his ES after that last game in the 5th round.  Doug Collett lost his 40 to James Buller in the 3rd round 4-8.  Mark Divin lost his 40 in the very last round 0-8 to a table run by Ray Berry which was Ray's only win in the match.  Mark Johnson lost a 40 in the 4th round 1-8 to Ted Ross.  Sam Prasad lost his 40 to Ken Hines 7-8 in the 4th round.  Four lost 40s were to 4 different players in the match.  The Great Whites got a team 40 in the very first round and started with 2 table runs in the first round and two more in the 2nd round getting 4 in the match.  There were 5 total table runs in the match as Ray Berry added his in the 5th round. The Great Whites maintain an 11.5 round lead over 2nd place while the Travelin' Cues work their way into 5th place.

IITWI outscored the Fallen Ones 171-156 by 15 balls.  Even though they were a +23 favorite and scored 8 less than that overall, IITWI should manage to take 3 rounds in the match.  By games, they took it 16-9.  Billy Chilton shot a 40 for IITWI with a +19 which was his ES.  Sam DelaSchott went 4-1 and shot a +8 which was 4 above his ES.  James Blair went 4-1 and shot a +7 which was right at his ES.  Cody Minahan and Bruce Haver, Jr. both shot 6 above their ES for the Fallen Ones and Justin Petter shot 5 above his, but they still managed to only get two rounds.  Sam DelaSchott lost a 40 to James Gatto in the 5th round 6-8.  James Blair also lost his 40 in the 5th round to Cody Minahan 5-8.  IITWI right now is in 4th place and is 3 rounds ahead of the Vegas spot.  The Fallen Ones who held onto 2nd place for a large part of the season has fallen down now out of the top 6.  They are currently in 7th just 0.5 rounds out of a Vegas spot and now find themselves fighting for a spot.

East Side Kids outscored Mayhem 177-160 by 17 balls and they were an 8-ball favorite.  They won by games 18-7.  ESK will take 3 rounds in the match.  ESK was lead this week again by Rebecca Busek who makes MVP for the 2nd week in a row.  Last week she was primary MVP and this week she was runner-up.  Rebecca went 4-1 and shot a +4 which was +10 above her ES.  Joey Bourgeois went 4-1 and shot a +13 which was 7 above his ES.  John Linton shot 2 above his ES to cap off the match for ESK.  Mayhem was lead by Tom Jaquette who was the only one on his team to shoot above his ES and did so by 4 balls.  Joey lost his 40 to Dexter Shelton 4-8 in the 5th round.  Lupe's only loss came to Dexter 6-8 in the very first round.  Rebecca lost her only game to Nicole Jackson 6-8 in the 3rd round.  John Linton lost his only game to Tom Jaquette also in the 3rd round 4-8.  Mayhem is currently tied for 9th place and they are just 2 rounds away from a Vegas spot.  ESK currently is in an 11th place tie and is 4.5 rounds outside of a Vegas spot.

8-Balls-4-Breakfast were outscored by DysFUNctional by 43 points (142-185), but they were able to take what appears now to be 4 rounds in the match leading further to disappointment by DysFUNctional.  DysFUNctional took 19-6 by games.  DysFUNctional was lead by Josh Pangilinan who made MVP this week going 5-0 as he shot a +18 which was 8 above his ES.  Wes Griffin shot 1 above his ES as their 2nd highest shooter.  As a sub, Eric Gauthier went 5-0 and shot a +18 which was 3 below his ES against this team.  8B4B was lead by Rob Schmid who shot 6 above his ES.  T.J. Skorupinski shot 4 above his ES and Brian Dobbins shot 3 above his.  Mark Harris even shot 1 above his ES as well to help them to take 4 rounds.  Trey lost his 40 to T.J. 6-8 in the 2nd round.  Currently, DysFUNctional is in 8th place just 1.5 rounds away from the Vegas spot.  8B4B is currently in 13th and are 6.5 rounds outside of a Vegas spot.
Over The Hill is surging in an attempt to move up in the standings and this week after outscoring the Rail Runners by 18 in a match where they were evenly matches, OTH will take 4 rounds in an effort to move up.  OTH was lead by two players who made MVP this week.  Jim Weygandt shot 10 above his ES and Terri Resendez shot 8 above her ES to help their team.  Brian Garbs added 6 above his ES with a 40 and Ben Duncan shot 1 above his ES as they raced to 4 rounds.  Nobody on the Rail Runners shot above their ES.  Debra Lutz lead her team shooting one below hers.  All five players on the Rail Runners went 2-3 in the match.  Right now, OTH is tied for 11th place with ESK and they are 4.5 rounds behind a Vegas spot...and though that number is done by percentage, they still have a chance to make a stronger move up as they have 4 make-up matches.  The Rail Runners right now are fighting to get into the top 6 as they are in a 9th place tie with Mayhem and just two rounds from a Vegas spot.  They seem to be on a roller coaster having won 5 rounds just last week.

Oops is another surging team.  Oops outscored the Disturbed Balls by 7 points though the Disturbed Balls were a +1 favorite.  Oops took the games 15-10.  They'll take 3 rounds in the match.  Oops was lead by Phillip Marshall who shot 6 above his ES with a 40.  Billy Barbier also shot 6 above his ES.  Patty Connelly shot right at her ES to help Oops.  Disturbed Balls was lead by Chad Mayton who shot 7 above his ES and Bill Balmerino shot 4 above his ES to help the Disturbed Balls take two rounds.  Right now, Oops is sitting in 6th place which is the Vegas spot.  The Disturbed Balls are in 14th.

The Ballbusters and WTBS did not play this week.

*When we mention a team is a favorite by a certain score, the score here is the difference in the score of the OVERALL MATCH.  So matches where a team is a favorite by 10 or less points should be very close matches overall.  You'll notice a low and high number.  This is a spread that compensates for different players that may play for a team.  Predictions are configured using overall team averages.  Most teams rotate 7 or 8 players into their matches, so obviously the actual spread will be determined by who plays for each team any given week.  That factor could be the reason for a team outscoring another team by a margin much different than their predictions may indicate.  Sometimes, a team just plays a great match though up and beyond their expectations against another team.  When a team does that, that team expects to win the majority, if not all the rounds in those matches.  Last season we had a team that was a 20-point underdog late in the season actually outscore their opponent by 20 points making for a 40 point difference.  That underdog team took all 5 rounds in the match at the end of the season when handicaps were applied..

Overall Preliminary Summary - At first glance, I see a tough match between the Great Whites and DysFUNctional.  The East Side Kids vs the Ballbusters could be tough depending on who shows up for ESK.  Mayhem and OTH should be a close match (within 10).  Oops and Fallen Ones should be a close match as well.  So there should be at least 4 close matches this week.  Then the Travelin' Cues should outscore the Disturbed Balls by a bunch.  WTBS should outscore 8B4B by a bunch.  IITWI should probably outscore the Rail Runners by no more than 20 to 25.  Let's see...
DysFUNctional at Great Whites (at Sharky's) - By TRA, the Great Whites are a +18 favorite over DysFUNctional.  With this mach being played at Sharky's and knowing who is playing for the Great Whites, the Great Whites will be a +20 favorite in this match.
IITWI at Rail Runners (at Side Pocket) - By TRA, IITWI is a +14 favorite and without James Jatzlau, that may hold up, especially with this match being at the Side Pocket, home for the Rail Runners.  IITWI is a +14 favorite over Rail Runners in this match.
East Side Kids at Ballbusters (at 20 Below) -  The East Side Kids are a +14 favorite by TRA, but that is if their two highest players show up.  I don't know that they will as they haven't lately.  This one is at 20 Below.  I'll say that ESK is a +5 favorite in this match.

WTBS at 8B4B (at Sharky's) - The TRA has this as a +24 match in favor of WTBS.  This match is at Sharky's and WTBS plays well there.  I'll go with the TRA on this one; WTBS +24 favorite over 8B4B.  This one could get ugly.

Travelin Cues at Disturbed Balls (at Q-Bar) - This one has by TRA, Travelin' Cues are a +22 favorite, but I think this one could be worse.  I'm going to say that the Travelin' Cues should outscore the Disturbed Balls by +25 in this match.

Mayhem at Over The Hill (at Stars) - The TRA on this match has Mayhem as a favorite by +10 which means it should be close.  I think it'll be closer.  Mayhem is a +5 favorite over OTH in this match.
Oops at Fallen Ones (at Slick Willies) - The TRA shows Oops being a 2 point underdog in this match for the match.  This match is at Slicks and I think it will be close.  I'll make this an even match.

Summary

It appears that my original predictions are pretty accurate.  The matches that I thought would be close end up being within 10 points at the most by TRA.  Then the others weren't as bad as I thought they would be, but they are more than +20.  I think there will be some fun and close matches this week.

Reoccurring News:

Recruiting for our league:

We have begun our 2009-10 Vegas League session.  Remember that teams are always on the lookout for players to rotate and for subs in general for the league when players aren't able to make it on a given Thursday night.  If you have friends or you're out and about and meet someone with an interest, please get their information to me so that I can have them available for teams who may need them.  Recruiting for our league is a league effort.
